It's summertime in the South and the tomatoes are bountiful! This piece is an ode to the summer time food & music festivals and, or course, the farmers' markets! One of the things I'm grateful for is the heirloom vegetable renaissance we are experiencing right now. We are remembering the importance of our traditional (and almost forgotten) foods of our ancestors. Their tomatoes weren't the genetically-modified, uniformly-shaped, red, bland tomatoes that are mass-marketed in the grocery stores today. And other vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes actually come in a rainbow of colors. I'm thankful there are people who have had the wisdom to protect the heirloom seeds and varieties.
